Bryning-with-Warton is a civil parish in the Borough of Fylde. The parish includes the village of Warton and the hamlets of Bryning and Kellamergh. It’s adjacent to the banks of the River Ribble, just East of Lytham and only 6 miles West of Preston.
Where is Warton?
It’s perhaps best known for its association with BAE Systems. The 7946 ft long airfield runway at Warton Aerodrome is a major assembly and testing facility of BAE Systems Military Air & Information. It’s also part of Lancashire Enterprise Zone.
Explore Wartons Past
The village is named Wartun or Wartuna in the Domesday Book, and the current spelling is first seen in 1227.
During the Second World War, all available land in Warton and Freckleton was commandeered by the Air Ministry. An enormous aerodrome was constructed with the biggest hangar (six acres) and the longest runway in Europe at the time.
On 29th November 1944 a large air force was taking off from Base Air Depot 2, Warton, bound for Bretigny, France. Two of the planes collided in mid-air whilst joining the formation. The aircraft then crashed on Warton Marsh, where they remain to this day buried under the mud and grass.
