Freckleton

Freckleton is an unassuming, pretty, south Lancashire village. It lives a serene life compared to its bustling neighbours, Lytham and St Annes.

Visit Fylde Coast contributor Sue Massey has been to take a look, and share one of her favourite walks.

At Freckleton you’ll find a library, post office, an assortment of shops and a cafe. Plus Lorenzo’s Italian restaurant, and three pubs: The Coach & Horses, The Plough, and The Ship.

Lancashire Coastal Way

One of several good reasons to visit Freckleton is that Freckleton is either the start or end of the 137-mile Lancashire Coastal Way.

When you start at Freckleton the walk heads west to Lytham St Annes, north along the coast to Blackpool and onwards to Silverdale in South Cumbria.

Do it in one go, or take a section at a time to see what this lovely Lancashire coastline has to offer.

A short walk – Freckleton to The Naze

We start at Freckleton for a delightful 3 mile return walk that gives a taste of this rural, peaceful part of south Lancashire.

Park for free at Freckleton Library.  If you’ve not got a snack to munch on your way, pick up something tasty from the local shops.  Or you might like to save yourself for a scrumptious pub meal as a reward at the end of your walk?

The walk starts at a public footpath that passes alongside The Ship on Bunker Street.  It’s a well-defined, easy walk, with several easily accessed stiles.  It can be muddy after heavy rainfall. Whatever the weather, strong walking shoes are recommended.

The walk passes above the creek, known as Freckleton Pool. There are fleeting glimpses through the trees of the creek below and lovely views out across the flat Lancashire plains to Preston, Winter Hill and Longridge Fell. You’ll be serenaded by birdsong along the way. However, the peace of the countryside might be rudely interrupted by a Typhoon taking off from Warton Aerodrome – but that in itself is a spectacular sight.

Naze Point – the River Ribble and River Douglas

The footpath skirts an idyllically situated property and then follows the public right of way across a field, frequently occupied by friendly cows. They’re easy to shoo away!

Walk diagonally across the field by the trig point (above) to arrive at Naze Point, a spectacular view where the Rivers Ribble and Douglas (also known as the River Asland) meet.  It’s a haven for birdlife – so don’t forget your binoculars.  It’s also good spot to eat that sausage roll you purchased in the village.

The return journey follows the same route – which looks completely different on the way back!

Back at The Ship. Do you walk past and return to the village? Or do you pop in to reward yourself with a glass of ale/wine/pop and something tasty from the menu? Decisions. Decisions.
