The Lytham St Annes Classical Association was formed in 2014 by AKS sixth former Katrina Kelly, the youngest person to ever form a branch since the Classical Association began in 1903.
This thriving local organisation is not only the newest but also the largest CA branch in the UK and is known for its friendly and informal meetings where home-made cakes, second-hand books and renowned visiting authors and lecturers compete for members’ attention!
Seven lectures a year by the country’s top classicists take place in the AKS Senior Hall, Clifton Drive South, FY8 1DT and are free of charge to adults who can join the Association for £12 a year (£1.71 a lecture) or £5 a year for children and students – just 71p a lecture!
Topics this year range from Myths and Movies to Marriage in Roman times; and from Sappho to The Ancient Greeks and the Sea. Our esteemed President, Dr Michael Scott, will be returning to give his very popular Presidential lecture in January 2016, and we are thrilled that Professor Paul Cartledge and Professor Edith Hall are travelling to Lytham St Annes for the first time in March and April respectively next year.
Everyone is welcome – no previous knowledge of Classics or the Ancient World is required and a warm welcome is guaranteed. The Association has a growing band of volunteers and is always appreciative of anyone wishing to join them, or the committee, to help run the lectures and organise events.
As well as lectures, the Association is this year organising a free beginner’s ‘Learn to read Latin’ group; recruiting Classics Ambassadors; has been invited to bring young people to a special day at the Classics Department at Oxford University; has launched the first LSA CA Bursary Fund to enable a local student to attend a Classics Summer School free of charge; and will be inviting young people to participate in the Association’s Short Classics Talk evening supported by Oxford University Classics Outreach Department.
If you are interested in attending or supporting any of these events and would like to enjoy lectures by first class classicists and historians, then please contact the Secretary, Jayne Kelly for further details at firstname.lastname@example.org . People are welcome to join at any lecture throughout the year or can buy a guest ticket on the night for £5.
We look forward to meeting you!
